Definition of Fabricated and Induced Illness (FII)
A child is harmed by being presented for medical attention with an injury or symptoms / signs or illness which have been deliberately caused or falsely reported by an adult carer who does not disclose the true nature of the child’s illness or condition.
Workshop Objectives
- To discuss the issue of definition and recognition of FII
- To understand some of the dynamics and behaviour patterns involved and the implications for assessment and recording
- To consider how cases of FII are managed on a multi-agency basis and the need to have specific child protection procedures in place
- To explore the options for decision making in safeguarding children affected by FII
- To think about the particular type of harm done to children treated in this way and what can be done to help them recover with special reference to disabled children
